Dr. Abraham P. Cano
The Board of Trustees approved Dr. Abraham P. Cano Freshman Academy and the Raven as the name and mascot of the ninth grade campus set to open Fall 2013. The name and mascot will accompany the school colors of navy and gold, which were selected during the November 2012 Board Meeting.
“We live in a community that has the opportunity to recognize many of its outstanding citizens,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Flores. “ All of the finalists were worthy of this nomination. Dr. Cano was a tremendous citizen, who returned to Harlingen after his studies to help his community. I applaud Dr. Cano and his family for their work. He left behind a great legacy in healthcare and helping others.”
Dr. Cano was a Harlingen native who established a well-known family practice facility in the community. He valued education, and continued his studies throughout his adult life to reach his goal of becoming a family-practice physician. To serve the community, he frequently offered his services to students who lacked insurance at Texas State Technical College.
“He was a Harlingen native and a true public servant,” said Mary Helen Cano, wife of Dr. Cano. “He was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He believed in the importance of education, and that no student should be left behind.”
